What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a US federal law established in 1996. It requires healthcare organizations to implement technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect the security, integrity, and confidentiality of patient information (PHI).

Xodo Sign and HIPAA compliance

Xodo Sign supports a HIPAA-compatible e-signature workflow by providing:

  • Tamper-evident documents — Signed documents are sealed and detectable if altered
  • Comprehensive audit trails — Full activity logs with timestamps, IP addresses, and signer details
  • Legally binding signatures — Compliant with ESIGN, UETA, and eIDAS regulations

Important: HIPAA does not mandate a specific method for signing documents containing PHI. Using Xodo Sign alone does not constitute HIPAA compliance — compliance depends on your organization's broader practices and policies. We recommend conducting your own assessments and seeking legal advice for your specific use case.
