Required fields must be completed by a signer before they can submit the document. You can mark any field as required or optional in the Document Editor during the Prepare step.
How to make a field required
- Open your document in the Prepare step.
- Click on a field to select it.
- In the field options panel, check the Required checkbox.
The field is now required — the signer must fill it in before they can submit the document.
How to make a field optional
To make a field optional, uncheck the Required checkbox in the field options. Optional fields display a Skip button during signing, allowing the signer to leave them blank.
Signature and Initials fields
Signature and Initials fields are required by default but can be made optional by unchecking the Required checkbox.
Why use required fields?
- Ensure signers don't accidentally skip important information
- Prevent incomplete document submissions
- Make certain fields optional for flexibility (e.g., a middle name or optional consent field)
